Profile

Research involves the development of i) whole-cell computational models of metabolism and ii) network biology approaches for studying signalling, transcription and metabolic networks as well as the interplay between these networks. Network biology and modelling are used to study the underlying molecular mechanisms of mammalian immune responses upon microbial infection. Moreover, we apply our approaches to identify personalised drug-targets against cancer, and we study stem cells at a systems-level. In addition, metabolic models of microorganisms are constructed to understand the fundamental underlying principles of evolutionary adaptation to changing environments. The latter research objective has major implication for medicine, since evolutionary processes drive tumor development, antibiotic resistance and compensation against immunological processes.
