Functional Urology deals with the way in which normal tissue like the urinary bladder should behave. In the Urological Research Laboratory of the Department of Urology we investigate and test the (sub) urothelial barrier and signalling function on cellular and molecular level. The GAG layer of the bladder is investigated in healthy subjects and pathological situations. We try to link the physical properties of cells of the lower urinary tract to functioning of various parts of the lower urinary tract. This implies investigating physical the relationship between E-Cadherins, alpha- and beta catenins, TRPV4 channels and the cytoskeleton of smooth muscle cells of the bladder. We use TRPV4 knock-out mice to investigate the ultrastructural effects of lack of physical properties of the urothelial cells. Our reseach is performed in cooperation with the Department of Physiology, Biochemistry, Tissue Engineering and Pharmacology.
John Heesakkers is heading the Unit of Functional Urology and Neurourology of the Department of Urology of the Radboud University Nijmegen MC, the Netherlands. Within this unit his interests are Female and Male Urology, Functional Urology, Neurourology and Reconstructive urology. He chairs the Society of Functional and Reconstructive Urology, a body of the Dutch Association of Urology. He is an active member of the EAU, ICS and the AUA. He is a faculty member of the European School of Urology and the chairman of the European Section of Female and Functional Urology.
