On 11 May, Christian Büll of the Dept. of Radiation Oncology, theme Cancer development and immune defense successfully defended his thesis entitled "Sialic acid mimetics for cancer immunotherapy" and was awarded the doctorate with the distinction Cum Laude.
Currently Christian continues to work in the group of Prof. Gosse Adema as a postdoc. His research focuses on sialic acid sugars and their role in tumor biology and tumor immunology. Aberrantly high expression of sialic acid-carrying glycans promotes tumor growth and progression and can support tumor immune evasion. Therefore, Christian is interested in sialic acid blockade and the chemical modification of sialic acids in tumor cells using glycomimetics to counteract tumor growth and progression.
